If the wind is blowing or fishing in a grassy body of water with live bait, on the bottom, try to keep fresh bait on the hook. Although fish need coverage any healthy lake needs aquatic growth, with all the invasive strands of foreign weeds talking over our lakes, bottom fishing is becoming more difficult. So keep a fresh bait on the hook. A longer leader is helpful also if fishing on a Carolina rig.

Billy Bob Fishing Tip

Some anglers will use split shot weights to make a Carolina rig. Instead of using swivels other anglers will wedge a stick in the egg way to keep it in place. Do not get lazy and in the habit of doing this. Always use swivels. Always use glass or plastic beads between the weight and the swivel. The fishing line and its knots are the backbone of the fishing pole set up.

Billy Bob Fishing Tip

Always wash your hands clean of all grease, oil and chemicals. This includes after eating Cajun flavored boiled peanuts. Touching the bait or lures with foreign oils can be a turnoff to the fish. The fish attracting oils commonly sprayed on bait and lowers our specifically manufactured to attract fish so those are okay.

Unbolt the pole and reel will be printed information on the manufacturer’s suggested best range of usability. The Rod will have a recommended line size. The reel will have the recommended range of different line sizes there sizes and lengths of lines for each real. Buying a real with an extra spool is suggested.

A hard set hook is not going to help catch fish in all situations. Certain hooks and certain lines catch less fish with a hard set. Reeling tight to the strike can improve you as an angler.

Billy Bob Fishing Tip

The use of long fishing poles allows you to reach over into areas were crappie can be found. Matching the bait to what crappie are eating is the most effective way to get a fish to bite. Because the mouth of the crappie is soft and setting the hook too hard can rip the hook out of the crappie’s mouth. It is best to just lift on the pole with a bite is detected.

Fishing for dolphin around floating structure or around current ages is a good way to increase your chances. Strolling long weed lines or pitching baits to floating floatsom are two common dolphin tactics. Natural baits are very effective.

Cold water bass in early spring can be picky eaters. It may be necessary to try different depths under the Cork. For deeper waters, remove the cork and let minnow free line. Shiners were work great for slow lethargic bass.

Billy Bob Fishing Tip

Fishing with soft plastic lures and the falcon at action to the fishing by presenting a slow moving lure that imitates an injured baitfish or other would be meal. Soft plastics can be used in the fall as well as the spring.

Billy Bob Fishing Tip

Slow trolling nightcrawlers on a worm harness for channel cats is a fun way to catch catfish. When the wind is just too much or sitting one places just not the thing to do than try this technique. It works and works well I can fill a core fast. Slow trolling for catfish makes sense.

Billy Bob Fishing Tip

The cooler months like November can offer great full-time fishing action in Santee. The feeding habits that are associated with cooler water make some great fishing as the fish are more aggressive. Natural live dates or lures that imitate them can be very productive during this transition into winter. Less pressure from other anglers and a great fish bite makes the fall months perfect for fishing Santee.

Billy Bob Fishing Tip

Catching baitfish like king mackerel, Wahoo and blackfin tuna or South Carolina’s coast can be an exciting experience. The long trip out can get cold in the fall so I recommend bringing a changing of clothing or investing in some good cold weather gear. Cut straight on the warmer waters around cold water in the warmer waters will probably hold bait fish which in turn will hold big fish.

Billy Bob Fishing Tip

Speckled trout in the fall can be easier to catch due to a lack of natural bait and the willingness to feed during other parts of the day rather than morning. Speckled trout in the fall can be a great way to to introduce a child to fishing.

Billy Bob’s fishing Tip

If stuck picking between two different rails and cannot decide which to pick do not use price as an excuse not to get the one you really want. This will come back to haunt you. Always clean and wash reels at the end of the fishing trips. Remove the spool’s first those chemicals and oils can deteriorate fishing line oil the gears periodically.

Billy Bob’s fishing Tip
Use lemon juice and sister’s hand cleaner to remove the smell of stink bait from your hands.

Billy Bob’s fishing Tip
Remember that when fishing and camping with the family, keep in mind that if the family trip not just yours, make it fun!  Teach them how to set up and why you’re doing things the way you do them.  Try to get them to want to come back for a next trip, even it means bringing a TV and VCR to occupy them at night.  I know that is just wrong, but it works!

Billy Bob’s Fishing Tip

When using bait buckets and aerators to transfer baitfish, it is important to have a gentle current in the bait bucket and the air bubbles to be a small as possible.  Air stones provide smaller bubbles which will dissolve or rise slower allowing for better absorption by the baitfish.  Slower currents in the bait buckets keep bait fresher and healthier allowing them to save energy for the hook.

Billy Bob’s Fishing Tip

When fishing for any of the Black Bass family, crawdads are by far the best bait.  Crawdads can be kept alive by twisting a bread tie around the hook then around the abdomen of the crawdad.  By securing the crawdad to the hook with a twisted bread tie, the crawdad is not injured and will wiggle to attract the fish and live longer.

Billy Bob’s Fishing Tip
Many Lures are designed to entice the angler as well as the fish being targeted.  When purchasing a lure look for the brightest and shiniest lure possible and the exact opposite.  Get Both!  If ones not working switch to the other.  Don’t stick with a lure that’s not working.  Try different styles both top  water and underwater lures.  These can be expensive so get some cheaper lures to cast around the trees and under water stump areas.  Underwater stumpy areas are best fished with top water or weedless lures.  Fishing can be as expensive as you want it!  Try to keep as many different kinds of lures as possible!

Billy Bob’s Fishing Tip
A small portable radio with the local 24hour weather station preset may save your life.  Fishing is great but keep some form of communication or radio present in case of approaching storms.  When fishing in different kinds of water conditions being prepared for anything is the right and smart thing to do.

Billy Bob’s Fishing Tip
When fishing with live bait, I recommend using different kinds of live bait on separate poles to find out what the fish are eating that day. Some days they prefer worms other days a crawdad is nice, fish like a variety too. Also check with local regulations to make sure theses baits are allowed in your area. From a water conservationist to all anglers, it is important to throw away all bait containers to a proper onshore garbage can and not back into the lake, river or pond. One more thing, foreign oils and scents on our hands from our snack foods can be transferred onto the bait fish and deter fish from hitting on your bait, wash your hands.

For the reason I am mentioning this is that I know Cajun flavored boiled peanuts are not liked by Stripers. An early morning fishing trip, I purchase a quart sized bag of the best ole Cajun flavored boil peanuts and ate them all morning long. My brother doesn’t like the Cajun flavored peanuts so he didn’t have any of them. I baited my hook with a nice looking shad with my Cajun spiced fingers and threw my line into the water, nothing happened, not even a nibble for the entire morning. My brother, on the other side of the boat, he hooked 2 beautiful Stripers and threw several fish into the water. Therefore, we concluded fish don’t like spicy bait.

Billy Bob’s Fishing Tip
Don’t turn your nose up to a bait until you at least tried it.  Fishing with stink bait, pork rinds and dough baits may just turn you on to a new experience and a new success.  There’s a lot of baits that are not conventional to most anglers but produce great results.  Corn, grubs, and salmon eggs.  Prepared baits can produce good results when fish just won’t hit anything else.  As I said before fish get bored and like a little variety in their food chain.

Billy’s Bobs Fishing Tip
The best rod and reel is the one that best suits the fish being targeted and the type of conditions of the water either it is the middle of the lake, along side of an embankment or a stream being fished in.  It’s better to be prepared, have it and not need it; than to not have it all.

Billy Bob’s Fishing Tip
It’s not uncommon to catch several different kinds of catfish at the same time while fishing.  When targeting catfish use several different kinds of baits, live bait, cut bait, stink bait, worms, shrimp, bologna or anything else that might  be tempting.  But don’t stay in one spot for more than 45 minutes if the fish aren’t biting.  Move on to another spot and try again.

Billy Bob’s Fishing Tip
If you want to catch a Big Fish, use Big Bait.  It’s never a bad day for fishing.  Cold.  Hot.  Windy.  Rainy.  Still a good day to go fishing!!

Billy Bob’s Fishing Tip
If targeting catfish, mature or big catfish prefer either live or cut bait to help sustain a high protein diet.  Stink baits will usually not always though, catch smaller catfish that do not yet have the hunting skill down pat.  Again this is just a rule of thumb.

Billy Bob’s Fishing Tip
It’s easy to get caught up in the fishing fever.  Our state has some absolutely beautiful lakes, rivers, streams and creeks.  Get out and enjoy therm but know the rules of fishing.  Understand each definition, know what a game fish is and what bait you can use where or Get Fined!

Billy Bob Fishing Tip
When partaking this wonderful recreation activity fishing either in fresh or saltwater, game fish or non game fish, it is the angler’s responsibility to know the rules and regulations of fishing within that state.  South Carolina’s Dept. Natural Resource publishes a pocket handbook or guide just full of information and color pictures of variety of fish species that available to fish.  It is important to become familiarize with the fresh water and salt water fishing rules, regulations and “Exceptions”.  Otherwise by not abiding the law the penalties are steep and costly.  So take some time and look over the handbook and “Go Fishing”!

Billy Bob’s Fishing Tip

Springtime fishing is a awesome way to get back in the spirit of life.  Springtime waters can be cold and the weather can be challenging; nevertheless, bring several different lures of different colors to target these bass.  Know which ones to uses for each condition.  Also remember to protect yourself by bringing clothes to match the possibility of changing weather.

Billy’s Bobs Fishing Tip

Experiment with different blades on the same lure to give you the exact speed and depth that you desire.

Billy Bob’s Fishing Tip

To catch a stubborn or sluggish fish or to just catch a bigger fish, I suggest super-sized the bait is more attractive.  During the hot and long summer days, bass are slow to move and prefer to conserve energy but can be attracted to bait that is big, attention-grabbing movements and slowly trailing along the bottom.  A gulpy rubber worm with an extra curly long tail with great scent is a recipe for hot summer catch.
